Bugün Dünya Barış Günü ve Irak Sirkhane gençlerimizden barış dolu fotoğraflar geldi.
Captured in the time of waiting, worrying, wandering around. Nothing to do, no place to go, no sense to have a hope. In the constant stagnation there is no chance for alteration or any ambition. This is a war on the outskirt of war.
Few boys gathered with an idea whom were longing for having their own community and growing new identity. They are not able to change the destroyed places but they can change destructed people.
They are Iraqi boys with an outstanding circus and teaching skills. In August 2014 some of them were temporary displaced to Turkey, to camp in Mardin. Volunteers of Sirkhane school spontaniously started to visit that camp every day to play circus with kids and teenagers. Days became months. Games developed into circus trainings. Aim to share joy and circus with more and more refugee kids has grown.
After a year whole group went back to northen Iraq to live in a IDP camp. Using the skills they learned from Sirkhane they set up circus workshops for kids to spread hope and smiles all around. Trainings continue. Accompanied by empathy and determination they took up the challenge, they are bringing joy to those who needed it the most. They have the best understanding on the needs of children of war. Need of friendship, need of learn, need of having dreams.
How to call them? They are Heroes!
Their power is informal education, circus and entertainment. They have strenght and courage to overcome difficulties and give new hope and peace to children, parents and community.
Peace and love to all and anywhere!
Photos by Circus Heroes, taken with all accessible devices, sent to us through messenger and mails.
Children love to play. Children love to explore, discover and learn.
Creative play is a essential ingredient in the emotional and social development for every person. Sirkhane and Flying Library celebrate the beggining of the new school year with art, circus and games. We play together to discover and express imagination, creativity, education and empathy.
We shared lunch altogether with kids and their families. We provided around 200 cups of ayran and 200 plates of delicious meal made from rice with parsley, almonds and meat.
We went for a parade around the neighborhood. Dressed motly, with colorful faces, playing tambour and flute. Everybody was invited to join this happy walk.
Flying Library for the first time hosted Circus Heroes of Sirkhane! Hale, Elif, Dersim, Lava, Khalid, Eyad, Yusuf, Zuheir and Ibrahim, the coolest performers and clowns in Mardin. They entertained young and old audience with the show that they prepared and directed especially for this event. Through art they encourage kids to read and discover stories written in books.
At the end everybody moves their bodies, dance and jump like crazy.
Dear children, we wish you the new academic year to be happy, successful and playful!
Sevgili tüm çocuklar sizlere yeni eğitim ve öğtetim döneminde mutlu, başarılı ve oyun dolu bir yıl diliyoruz.

Khaled is an amazing boy who left his life in Syria four years ago. Now he is building his future in Mardin with the help of his family, friends and Sirkhane. He is Sirkhane student since three years. Easy learning ability, passion to circus and dance distinguished him in the classes from the first days. Natural ambition and eagerness to train in school, after school, in any possible place and situation lead him to gain very quickly many skills. Today Khaled is juggling with 5 balls, clubs, diablo, walking on stilts, riding monocycle and more. He was also taught to be a social circus trainer for children.
Khaled helps as a teacher in Sirkhane since one year. He participate in our program "training for trainers" which aims to educate local and refugee youth to be teachers in circus pedagogy.

Besides conflicts, crimes and bad politics happening now in the south east of Turkey there is still life going on. High security level, anger, sadness and mourning became our daily norm. Difficulties multiplying day by day limited Sirkhane activities. In these tough conditions we decided to make Social Circus Festival this year, for the fifth time. Because we believe in peace and life and we unite with whole community, waiting for better days.
These photos are documentation of the smallest circus parade happened in Mardin.

IM TRAIN TRIP

From the main road coming from the airport, Mardin has the appearance of a fortress. The town overlooks the vast plain of Mesopotamia. Everything seems to flow at ease, but it is only an appearance. The small and narrow streets are swarming of people, everywhere there is movement, faces and bodies appear and disappear at every corner, everything is mixed with the sounds and smells, creating a sort of involving music, the music of Mardin. The details, like the notes in a score, make only one great melody, and the people here, as musicians, give it life, make that music play. Every musician, whit his own instrument, every artist with his own tool, each with his own job. You can hear the carpenter plannering the wood, the noise of the barber's razor on the faces, and the knife grinder sharpening the blades, the fruits and vegetables that rolls from a basket to another, the baker scrapes the bottom of the big oven when bakes the bread. Everyone is involved, all make a sound, all dance, like children laughing and playing on the streets and into the Sirkhane. This is the first impression that Mardin gives to its visitors, this is what the cameras can capture. The shots show the simplicity and the fullness of everyday’s life in the small Turkish town. The Old Masters of diminishing jobs are telling stories with their own hands, years of history and sharing, from father to son, so from the workshop room to the cinecameras the traditions are captured and documented.

Our cooker is an expert! Have a special talent to the kitchen. The food here is so delicious! The Turkish food are so great and here whe can taste some typical flavours of this country cooked and served for a so nice people! We start the day always in the best way! An energizer to start and wake up! This is one of the first games played in group. The game was to learn to trust each other. The password for this game is “I'M FLYING” and “I'M FOLLOWING!”. The people had so much fun! Nice game to start! And then a game to learn all names of the people! “Guess who i am”. Our days are full of energy and happyness! And we just want to share that! The terrace is the perfect spot to stay after the lunch and pratice circus numbers, playing music, taking photos and make movies!
3 DAYS to SIRKHANE crowdfunding action end.
You have seen a lot of colours and smiles on the Sirkhane photos and videos. This is all true but we have also second face. Did you seen this part of the school? We need to fix it and offer to our students as a training space, cause we have more and more kids coming to the classes but too weak conditions not allowed us host and teach all of them.

4. İM International Social Circus Festival is coming to Mardin. During this event Sirkhane Circus School will host around 80 international people from 18 countries. Some of them are already known in local community from the previous year festival. Circus artists: big group of aerial acrobats, jugglers, clowns, stilts walkers, moviemakers, musicians...
We are so happy that we will host artists from afghan Mobile Mini Circus for Children, from the Palestinian Circus School, from ukrainian Platz Art, from armenian Circus and many other groups. With these people from war zones the theme of IM Festival 2014 - PLAY FOR NO WAR is becoming more meaningful with truly strong dimension. Play, not fight - peace through the art.
During 20 days of festival kids and local youth will receive intensive workshops and circus trainings. Last 10 days İM circus caravan with amazing shows will pass by the new and old town of Mardin and by small surrounding villages. The best is that kids students are going to perform circus with their teachers. The sandy desert of Mesopotamia will turn to a colourful, noisy, fairytale land. Come everybody to see it!
In less than 2 weeks festival will start! Count your clubs, sharp your stilts, tie high your trapez and pump up your monocycle wheels! İM tent is landing in the town!
We are organizing this Festival with fewer oportunities and conditions.

Each minute is bringing a new reasons to smile. One of the favourite activities in school is stilts walking. Soon our young stilts walkers will be known in whole Mardin.
